LAKE GEORGE - When the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States, one of the first things to disappear from store shelves was hand sanitizer. So many people started making their own, including area distilleries.
For Adirondack Pub & Brewery in Lake George, which also operates High Peaks Distilling, it was a way to help the community and themselves as their restaurant and beer business took a hit.
That kind of innovation and a scrumptious mac and cheese dish are keeping them open for business.
Things have been bustling, but not just since outdoor dining resumed on their patio. They used the coronavirus closure to sell plenty of takeout, but also spruce up the place a bit by redoing the bar and bathrooms.
Assistant General Manager Preston Kirkpatrick says March was when they would have started ramping up for their busy season. Instead, they had to scale down staff, still at just 50-percent of their usual numbers for June.
They also didn't see the revenue they normally would. Temporarily converting their high peaks distillery over to making hand sanitizer provided a boost company-wide.
That has allowed them to get back to doing what they do best. That’s the tasty libations and favorites like the short rib mac and cheese, shrimp Toscana, and the papaw burger.
