More than 100 inmates and 14 employees have tested positive for the coronavirus at Greene Correctional Facility.

People at a rally outside the prison were calling on Gov. Cuomo to grant clemencies to all older people at the facility.

Members of All of Us were joined by members of Release Aging People in Prison Campaign.

"It's intolerable. There's no reason why like other states Cuomo isn't releasing the most vulnerable of our population to make sure they're safe," said Young.

The state and Department of Corrections and Community Supervision came under attack earlier this week by Greene County officials who say the state has failed to adequately test and report their findings. They criticized DOCCS for a lack of communication.

DOCCS released the following statement on Thursday and went on to point out that since the pandemic began, 3,027 inmates were granted early releases.

Statement from DOCCS spokesperson Thomas Mailey:

It's small town politics – and naivety – for the Greene County crew to say that the state has dropped the ball concerning the COVID outbreak at Greene Correctional Facility. The facts are we're in the middle of battling a global pandemic, there's clusters popping up across the state, and we've adopted a series of responses to protect both the public and the incarcerated population. We're testing every prisoner in the state, deploying rapid tests for staff, and we've been in constant communication with the local health departments.

Every facet of the state's response to the COVID-19 outbreak has been guided by facts, scientific data, and the guidance of public health experts at NYS DOH and the CDC, and the work to protect the safety of New York's incarcerated population has been no different.
