Gov. Hochul says 92% of healthcare workers in hospitals across the state met the vaccine mandate deadline.

She says the mandate was hard to do, but the right thing to do.

"It's hard to force people to do something that you truly wish they would do voluntarily," Hochul said Thursday at a COVID briefing in New York City.

Hochul says people should know the hospital workers taking care of them are also vaccinated.

"I kept focusing on the people who when they get sick, someone's in a car accident, they present themselves to a hospital, or an expectant mom is making sure all her family members are vaccinated, so when the baby comes home, that the baby will be safe," she added.

Hochul couldn't give an exact number of how many backup health care workers have been brought in to fill staffing shortages.

As far as the lawsuits in court challenging this mandate, Hochul said she's confident the state will win.
