Construction continues in New York City, forcing service cuts to Amtrak trains that travel to the city from right here in the Capital Region. The governor met Thursday with Amtrak leadership to discuss the looming shutdown of the East River tunnels.

Amtrak has agreed to provide enhanced inspections, additional shift crews, and the development of an operational response plan to help mitigate potential impact on commuters throughout the duration of that project.

Gov. Hochul said she supports rehabilitating the tunnel, but wants to ensure riders are protected, whether they traverse the Empire Service Line, or the Long Island Rail Road.

The governor also said she believes the work could be done without a full shutdown, but is happy they are taking steps to ensure the process will not be a burden for commuters.
