STOCKPORT - Nicki Strattman loves her birthday. Last year, there was no celebration because of COVID, and then in June, she lost her mother, her caretaker.

"So this year with her mom passing away and her coming into our care, we've been talking about her birthday," said Nicki's sister-in-law Toni Strattman.  "She's been waiting for it since August!"

Sister-in-law Toni Strattman wanted to do something big.

She put on Facebook how much Nicki likes getting mail. Soon, the birthday cards started coming,  hundreds of them, from all around the country.

They got a big batch from Germantown Elementary School, and a bunch from Ocean State Job Lot in Valatie.

The family puts the cards up all over the house, but there are so many, they're running out of room.

"It's just so incredible, and we just really wanted the community to know how grateful that we are, and it really has been changing her life and just making her so joyful," said Strattman.

Nicki also got a big birthday parade recently with many first responders and a lot of excitement.

She likes to go to the mailbox and find out what's come for her. This is her actual birthday, and of course more cards were waiting for her.

When the cards come, Nicki likes to sit down and read every single one. Toni wants people to see the joy a simple act like sending a card can bring.

Toni says they're thankful to everyone for helping Nicki through her first birthday without her mom, and for taking the time to make her smile.

"And it's just made a world of difference," she said. "She sometimes opens up the cards, and she just starts crying because she's just so happy. It's made such a difference."

If you'd like to send a card, you can mail it to:
