Philmont natives Guy Minkler and John Seery were only in their mid-20s when they were killed in the line of duty during World War I.

The village of Philmont and leaders are making sure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

Philmont became an official Purple Heart village, and is recognizing the Army Sergeant and Private First Class with the oldest military award, reserved for those who were injured or killed in the line of duty.

The medals and proclamation were presented by Sen. Daphne Jordan and Congressman Antonio Delgado during a moving ceremony, as a small way to say thank you to the men and their families who paid the ultimate price.

The community hopes it serves as a reminder to all Americans about what Memorial Day is truly about.

Besides Philmont, other Memorial Day ceremonies in Columbia County were held in Stuyvesant and Valatie.
