Board of Regents appoints first African American chancellor

New York's Department of Education Board of Regents has appointed Lester Young Jr. as chancellor.

He's the first African American chancellor since the board was established in 1784.

Young will lead and serve as the presiding officer of the Board of Regents, which is responsible for the general supervision of all educational activities in the state.

His first day as chancellor is Tuesday, January 12.
