High school football, volleyball, and competitive cheer will be delayed until the spring season in New York state.

New York's Public High School Athletic Association made the announcement Wednesday.

The organization's executive director said they spent two days talking with almost 500 athletic directors across the state before the decision was made.

It was determined the risk was too high because of the pandemic.

Lower-risk sports like soccer, cross country, field hockey, golf and tennis have been cleared to begin practicing on September 21.
