ALBANY - ESports is a growing, high grossing industry that isn't going anywhere.

The University at Albany is doing its part to keep up with the Joneses. The school held a grand opening for its new eSports arena on Friday.

This year, the industry surpassed $1 billion in revenue. That's up more than 26 percent from last year.

The global eSports audience is now up to 453 million people.

The discipline is headed up by Head Coach Michael Lexzinsky, who is a professor in the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity.

He says there is a misconception that eSports are anti-social activities.

To the contrary, Lexzinsky says they build team building and communication skills, just as well as traditional physical sports.

Meet some of the arena's first players by watching the video of Emily Burkhard's story.
