June 25, 2019 08:04 PM

Allison Poland loves numbers. In fact, she's so good at math, she took AP Calculus as a sophomore at Troy High School. To those who know her best, it's no surprise she is number one in this year's graduating class.

"Whenever I have homework, I do my math homework first. That's the thing I actually want to do," said Allison.

For the last four years, Allison has played soccer for the school, was part of the Math and National Honor Societies and was a member of the French Club. She's a believer in good study habits, good friendships and determination.

"You have to want to put the work in. It's not like you can just come in and it'll happen," said Allison.

As she gets ready to move on, her advice to incoming freshman is don't be afraid to ask for help. Allison says the teachers at Troy are always willing to assist and support. She has a particular fondness for Miss Ziobrowski, her Global History teacher.

"She just stood out to me as someone I could look up to and aspire to be like," said Allison.

Catlin Ziobrowski says she knew she had a stellar student from the very beginning.

"Just seeing her eagerness to learn. She didn't, her eyes never left me. She was always focused on listening to what I was saying, what I was doing, showing her investment in her education, always wanting to learn," said Ziobrowski.

It's that drive the Miss Ziobrowski says will help push Allison to the next level. In the fall she's off to Le Moyne College in Syracuse where she says she will most likely major in math.

Allison thanks her teachers, friends and family for being a part of her success.

"It's kind of a group effort. It's not just me. It's everyone in my life [who] helped me to have this honor," said Allison.

"Wherever she's determined to go, the sky is the limit for her," said Miss Ziobrowski.
