State Education Department names new Acting Education Commissioner

The State Education Department has named a new leader after Commissioner MaryEllen Elia leaves her post.

Executive Deputy Commissioner Beth Berlin will serve as acting commissioner. She will take over on September 1.

Berlin has worked at the State Education Department for six years. She will be in the role while the search for a new commissioner continues.

Elia surprised the Board of Regents on Monday, when she announced her departure to pursue a new opportunity.
