February 25, 2019 06:47 PM

Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed a pilot program that would offer free childcare to up to 400 single parents pursuing their college degrees at certain community colleges. The Family Empowerment Community College Pilot Program is part of the 2019 Women's Justice Agenda Proposal.

Under the program, students could receive free on-site childcare at participating SUNY and CUNY community schools.

"Access to childcare can make all the difference in the life of a single parent who often has to choose between going to classes or caring for their children," said Governor Cuomo.

Lydia Boruda knows how difficult the struggle can be.

"I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to continue my education or I'd have to postpone it," said Boruda, a single mother of three.

Boruda's eight month old son attends the Viking Child Care Center which is located on the Hudson Valley Community College Campus.

"The best thing about it is I can visit him during the day and feel close to him," said Boruda.

She’s is not alone. According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research there are about two million single mothers and 500,000 single dads attending colleges in the United States. Studies show one in four of them is very likely to drop out because of their parenting responsibilities.

Cuomo's proposal also includes support services for the single parents including tutoring, career counseling and help to transition into a four-year school if they want to continue their higher education.

Cuomo says the program is designed to help lift parents and their children out of poverty as well as help close the gender wage gap.

It's an investment Boruda says would be worth it for so many parents just like her.

"It doesn't hurt to try. Just take the risk and go for your dreams," she said.
