Leaders with the World Health Organization are speaking about the importance of reopening schools. The head of the WHO says that closing schools because of the pandemic should be a last resort.
He says closures should be temporary, and only in places with high levels of transmission. He spoke in Geneva Tuesday.
"The data we have shows that less than 10% of reported cases and less than 0.2% of deaths are in people under the age of 20. However, more research is needed about the factors that increase the risk of severe COVID cases, severe COVID disease and death among children and adolescents,” Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. “The potential long term health effects in those who have been infected remains unknown."
If schools are forced to close because of the transmission of the virus, leaders say education should be guaranteed through distance learning.
