The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus inside Greene Correctional Facility is climbing. Officials with NYSCOPBA reported Thursday 94 inmates have active infections, as well as 14 prison staff members.
Of the 14 staff members, seven are civilian employees and seven are corrections officers.
Tammy Sawchuk is the Executive Vice President for NYSCOPBA, and she says they have been notified that the entire north side of the complex is in lockdown. At this time, no visitors or outside contractors or volunteers are allowed in.
Officials with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision say another 200 inmates are in quarantine while 300 coronavirus tests are still outstanding.
Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden says he is frustrated and disappointed with a lack of communication from the state concerning the virus outbreak. He also has concerns about a lack of testing before inmates are released.
"That was part of my complaint to the governor's office [Wednesday] was how can they be released without testing? And my answer back was that's the protocol. They were asymptomatic. I reject that protocol. You're in a facility that's having a pandemic. You're elbow to elbow with people. Test them anyway," said Groden.
DOCCS says they expect the results for those outstanding tests to be back by Friday.
