Accutane links to birth defects in pregnant women

Hundreds of pregnant women still take a powerful acne medication, despite its known risks on the fetus.

The drug, sold as Accutane, has been linked to severe birth defects in pregnant women, even if it is taken for a short period of time.

The FDA imposed special restrictions in 2006, requiring women to take a pregnancy test before taking the medication.

Pregnancies among women taking Accutane peaked in 2006 with nearly 800, but have fallen to 200 to 300 a year since 2011.
