Capital Region health activist dies

A local health activist has passed away.

NewsChannel 13 first introduced you to Shakir Cannon in June 2016. Cannon was living with sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder.

He grew up in East Greenbush. Cannon was dedicated to improving the health and lives of others diagnosed with the painful disease.

His activism was known nationwide and even brought him to the Barack Obama White House. NewsChannel 13 last profiled his efforts this past May.

A few days ago, Cannon lost his battle with the disease. He leaves behind a wife and 5-year-old daughter along with many friends. He will be missed.
