New York State health commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker declared influenza is now prevalent.

That means health care workers who have not been vaccinated against the flu must wear surgical masks when working with patients.

Flu activity across the state is now considered to be widespread, with confirmed cases in 42 counties and all five boroughs of New York City.

There have been 691 hospitalizations and one death associated with the flu so far.

Here in the capital region, 26 cases of the flu were reported this week.
