Eye exams could be a real lifesaver

(KPRC) Doctors say your eyes are the window to your health. 

Looking inside your eyeball shows nerve endings and blood vessels, which can reveal diabetes, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, macular degeneration, glaucoma and can potentially stop fatal aneurysms and strokes.

Optometrists can also be the first doctor to spot a popped blood vessel in the eye.

"Then we actually have to treat it with laser at that time and the purpose of the laser treatment is to stop the hemorrhaging so that you don't have one of the main arteries, main veins hemorrhaging because that can cause permanent vision loss," says Dr. Bridgitte Shen Lee, "and if you have one of the main vessels leading into the optic artery that hemorrhages behind the eyeball that could potentially lead to death."

That laser treatment can help stop a stroke or aneurysm.
