A new strain of the coronavirus may be spreading rapidly in New York City. That's according to two studies that have not yet been peer-reviewed nor published in a medical journal.

One study is from Columbia University.

It says the variant has been "steadily increasing" since it was first detected back in November.

Researchers say the variant has  increased to 12.3% of cases by mid-February.

The study says it shares some characteristics with the variants first identified in Brazil and South Africa.
