More Americans than ever before are dying from either overdoses, suicide or alcohol-related incidents.
The sobering new information is from the Trust for America's Health. Their new report finds in 2016, 142,000 Americans died from drugs or alcohol. That's the highest number ever recorded.
Such deaths are highest among whites, but have risen dramatically among people of color in recent years. Between 2015 and 2016, there was a 39 percent increase in drug deaths among black Americans.
The main culprit? Synthetic opioids. Opioid- related deaths doubled from 2015 to 2016.
