Fathers and sons share many things. However, few share a battle with the same cancer. In this case, the father's experience helped save his son's life.
It's hard to miss 22-year-old River Seybolt on the soccer field. Between the unique hair color and his standout play, the Sage forward is a crowd and team favorite.
However, at day's end, it's his journey to health he wants to impress on you. If you're a man, it could save your life.
"At the end of Thanksgiving break, I just felt a hard spot, an abnormality," Seybolt recalled. "I told my dad about it, because my dad had testicular cancer four years prior."
That was November 2016. His dad was emphatic: Don't waste time. Get it checked. Three days later, he saw a doctor, endured a battery of tests and got the devastating news.
"So we looked at it and we're going to have to remove the testicle completely and you have testicular cancer," Seybolt recalled being told.
That was on a Wednesday. Two days later, he underwent surgery and started three weeks of grueling chemotherapy.
Despite his dad's bout of testicular cancer at age 41, Seybolt, then 21, never took to heart that regular exams could be a lifesaver.
"Everybody thinks, 'Oh yeah, I won't get cancer,'" he noted.
So as he regained his strength and returned to the sport he loves, he dedicated himself to sharing his story.
"How hard is it to check yourself in the shower or something? Just feel. You know what they feel like and you know what they're not supposed to feel like," he pointed out.
This Thanksgiving, there will be much to celebrate in Seybolt's life. He returned to playing soccer and became Sage's leading scorer - topping the old record of 35 goals. He's also healthy.
"If it wasn't for my dad, I probably wouldn't even have gotten it looked at. I could have been in a lot worse situation," acknowledged Seybolt.
When Seybolt graduates from Sage, he hopes to play professional soccer. We wish him all the best!
