Roundtable discussion looks at opioid epidemic

ALBANY - NewsChannel 13 was proud to help facilitate a special roundtable discussion on the opioid epidemic Tuesday evening.

Heading the event was Dr. Cheryl Healton. She's the dean of the College of Global Public Health at NYU.

She's also part of a task force that authored the study "Bringing Science to Bear On Opioids."

"The most important things to do are to provide medication-assisted treatment for those who are opioid addicted. Without that treatment, for those who have opioid abuse disorder, they have a fairly high probability of dying through an accidental overdose or sadly through other depths of despair – such as suicide," Dr. Healton said.

Dr. Healton was brought in as part of WNYT and the Times Union's "Prescription for Progress" initiative.
