Hoosick Falls cop resigns after suspect escapes custody

June 26, 2019 07:32 PM

NewsChannel 13 Investigates has learned a Hoosick Falls police officer has since resigned, after an inmate escaped police custody back in March. The inmate was found dead of a drug overdose in Massachusetts.

Last spring, NewsChannel 13 broke the story that this same officer was placed on paid administrative leave after the incident.

We've been fighting for these documents for weeks. Now village officials in Hoosick Falls confirm to 13 Investigates the officer quit his part time position on the force, effective June 14.

Village officials won't officially tell us why, so we're withholding the officer's name until we receive additional information we've requested including the resignation letter.

In late March, Justin Faatz escaped police custody, walking right out the front door of the police station, with a handcuff still attached to his wrist after being picked up burglary and other charges. His escape set off a massive manhunt across three states. Faatz was found dead of an apparent heroin overdose a week later in Massachusetts.

Attendance records NewsChannel 13 obtained exclusively show the officer in question was put on paid leave nine days after the incident, and remained at that status for 10 weeks before resigning. He earned a total $2,784 while on leave. He had no comment when NewsChannel 13 reached him by phone on Wednesday.

Hoosick Falls Mayor Rob Allen said something similar.

"It puts us in a little bit of a weird spot because it's an internal investigation and it involves personnel, so there's not a lot we can say right now," said Allen.

Village officials declined comment when we asked again on Wednesday. The police chief at the time stated he takes full responsibility and they would investigate whether it was human or equipment error. We're waiting to hear back from family of Faatz on this update.
