State police are once again reminding people to be careful when asked to buy gift cards for a third party over the internet.
Investigators say they're looking into multiple incidents in which a victim was asked to purchase gift cards as payment for goods or services.
Back in June, they say someone attempted to buy an ATV online.
As payment, the person was asked to buy $1,000 worth of eBay gift cards and provide the seller with the serial numbers from the cards.
In another incident, a scammer contacted a victim and claimed to be a friend of theirs, asking for financial assistance to help a local church. That person lost $2,000.
If you believe you may be the victim of a scam like this, call New York State Police.
