Upstate New York is showing its love for small businesses today on the eighth annual Small Business Saturday.

American Express created the day back in 2010 to respond to business owners' most pressing need: getting more customers during the busy holiday season.

Celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year, the event helps shine a light on small, independent businesses that keep local communities thriving.

The Downtown Troy Business Improvement District is celebrating with free tote bags, a shopping passport and map, holiday promotions, and a free city trolley until 4 this afternoon - to showcase the over 120 independent retail businesses, bars, and restaurants.

Other businesses, such as Salvage Flair in Saratoga County and Cafe Venice in Canajoharie, are celebrating with kickoff parties, food, reduced prices, raffles, and live entertainment.

Our own Dan Bazile is showcasing all that downtown Troy has to offer on this special day. His report will be updated on the web tonight.
