Clifton Park payroll company's abrupt shutdown sends employers scrambling nationwide

September 06, 2019 06:17 PM

Employees and business owners across the Capital Region woke up in a panic on Friday.

A local payroll company, MyPayrollHR, abruptly shut down. That means payroll wasn't processed, and in some cases people had money taken out of their accounts.

Now businesses are scrambling to make things right for their employees.

What's happening in the Capital Region is apparently affecting people and business across the United States. In fact, there might be tens of thousands of people nationwide impacted by what appears to be a multi-million dollar fraud.

The epicenter of this financial scheme appears to be in Clifton Park.

NewsChannel 13 visited the company's headquarters on Friday to find the lights off, no one there, and a sign off the wall. A person who works in the building says she saw employees removing items from the building all week long.

Hear from worried victims about how it's affecting them by watching the video of Dan Levy's story.

The governor has called for an investigation right away. He released the following statement:

"The sudden and unexplained shutdown of MyPayrollHR in Clifton Park is disturbing and completely unacceptable. Its reckless actions have left employees across the state and the nation with negative bank accounts and forced businesses who depend on its payroll services to scramble to find ways to compensate their employees.

"These businesses and workers deserve answers, and I am calling on the Department of Financial Services to investigate this irresponsible company's actions. This is not how we do business in New York, and we will not allow these bad actors to take money away from the hard-working people in this state."

The Governor encourages consumers who believe they may have been affected to file a complaint at www.dfs.ny.gov/complaint or call (212) 480-6400 or toll-free (800) 342-3736 (Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM).
