New York State will begin enforcing its ban on single use plastic bags on Oct. 19.

The ban went into effect on March 1, but was put on hold after a manufacturer of plastic bags filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says the court recently ruled in favor of implementing the ban.

New Yorkers use about 23 billion plastic bags a year. A large majority end up in landfills, waterways, or in the street.
