Tax Department warns of scam involving fake letters

The New York State Tax Department is warning people about a scam.

The department says fake letters are being sent to New Yorkers demanding a debt payment.

The scammers are threatening to take away passports and driver's licenses if the warning is ignored.

Don't fall for it, it's a fake.

The tax department says any mailings it sends will include the tax department logo, a detailed explanation for why it was sent and an explanation of your rights as a taxpayer.
