Survey: 4 in 10 workers have two jobs

July 09, 2018 03:37 PM

(NBC News) A Recent survey finds a surprising number of Americans are working two jobs.

Nearly four in ten workers have what's referred to as a side hustle, or a second job.

Bankrate.com's Amanda Dixon says their survey of more than 1,000 workers found nearly 40-percent were forced into a second job because of low pay from their first one.

"Thirty-eight percent of people say that yes, that's the case. They can't afford to cover their ordinary living expenses so they do need that extra source of income," Dixon says.

The majority of these second jobs aren't with Uber or Lyft, but rather in landscaping, home repair, online sales or child care.

Men are earning three times more than women in side jobs, but that's probably because they're putting in more hours in at their second gig.
