The sale of recreational marijuana recently became legal in New York state. However, the town of Amsterdam is moving ahead to opt out of retail sales.
Under the new legislation, individual towns and cities are allowed to do that. However, that action will require the adoption of a local law and a public hearing.
The town board approved a resolution imposing a 30-day moratorium on putting in any dispensaries just 24 hours after the state passed the legislation.
The public hearing was set for 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
