TROY - The ribbon has been cut on a brand new cafe in Troy.
Café Euphoria is a worker-owned cooperative that provides a new safe space for all transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.
It includes a full-service restaurant that offers breakfast and lunch and is open to everyone. The business also offers a thrift shop, a small co-working space and helps organize community events.
Dr. Atsushi Akera, an RPI professor, came up with the idea during the pandemic.
Decisions are made collectively and everyone is paid the same wage.
While plans for Café Euphoria include obtaining a beer and wine license, the focus remains on building community through food, conversation and their casual atmosphere.
Café Euphoria serves plant-based, vegetarian, and pescatarian fare on a seasonal menu.
The cafe's menu is priced at a sliding scale, depending on your income.
They are open at their location on River Street for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Friday and offer brunch service on Saturday and Sunday.
Thanks to the Troy Business Improvement District for this submission.
