Pro-Cuomo mailer accuses Nixon of anti-Semitism

Just days before the primary elections, the New York State Democratic Party sent mailers out accusing candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon of anti-Semitism and bigotry.

"I think its despicable frankly. It's despicable for many reasons" said local Nixon supporter, Mark Mishler.

Some local supporters of Nixon say this is wrong for several reasons.

"It's inappropriate on the level of the state Democratic Party to engage in this last-minute effort to divide voters on the basis of ethnic background or religious back," said Mishler.

The head of the state Democratic Party, Geoff Berman, released a statement Sunday afternoon saying, "the state party sent out a wrong and inappropriate mailer - we will work with the Nixon campaign to send out a mailing of their choosing to the same universe of people."

Then at a press conference Sunday afternoon, Gov. Cuomo denied knowing anything about the mailers. He too said they were inappropriate and not the tone he approves of.

This string of events has upset many party Democrats as it continues to unfold.

"It's also just really bad politics. It's wrong. It's not how the state Democratic Party should be functioning," said Mishler.

Nixon attends a synagog in New York City and is raising her two children in the Jewish faith. She responded to the ordeal on Twitter saying, "The mailers Gov. Cuomo and the New York State Democratic Party have sent out are not only an attack on my family but on all New Yorkers."

Now some Democrats are calling on the party for more.

"Whoever was directly responsible for this should resign because whatever the state Democratic Party stands for, this does not meet what they say it is," said Mishler.
