A cat named Soldier is still in rough shape, as he's being treated at the Saratoga County Animal Shelter for injuries to his head and neck.
He was found in a carrier in Clifton Park. There was a blanket inside, but the animal was far from comfortable.
Police say he appears to have chemical burns.
"On Thursday, state police in Clifton Park were contacted by animal control about a cat that was injured and abandoned in a crate by the Hallendale apartment complex," said New York State Police Trooper Kerra Burns.
Animal control called state police, and the neutered, male, dark-grey tiger cat was brought to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter for emergency medical treatment.
He was given the name Soldier, after he showed strength in his recovery.
Police believe his injuries are recent, possibly within a day or two of being found.
"I think it's disturbing to anybody to think somebody might willfully harm something so defenseless, and we're hoping that if the public does know anything that they would come forward," said Trooper Burns.
Shelter staff say Soldier is moving along with his recovery and is still getting medical treatment.
Police are not sure of the cat's age, but they believe he belonged to someone, and they want to know how he ended up with these injuries and abandoned.
Anyone who wants to make a donation can do so through the Friends of the Saratoga County Animal Shelter.
State police would like anyone with any information about the cat's owner or this case to give them a call at (518) 583-7000.
