A teenager pleaded guilty in Washington County on Thursday to murdering his best friend.

Only NewsChannel 13's camera was rolling as Adrian Sawyer admitted killing Maverick Bowman.

Sawyer's guilty plea came as the murder case against him was headed toward trial.

If you think the defendant has a baby face, you wouldn't be wrong. Adrian Sawyer is just 16 years old and on Thursday, he pleaded guilty to murder.

What makes it more difficult to comprehend is that his victim was his best friend. Sawyer used a serrated knife to cut the throat of Maverick Bowman after the two had been partying and hanging out at a Putnam home on July 26.

Prosecutors say the attack was unprovoked. In fact, the 15-year-old Bowman was passed out when Sawyer stabbed him.

Facing 25 years to life in prison if convicted at trial, Sawyer who has cognitive disabilities, decided to plead guilty and get 20-years to life.  The district attorney says this was the best possible resolution of a horrible incident. Sawyer's attorney said evidence uncovered made a so-called emotional disturbance defense too risky.

Sawyer will be sentenced February 22.
