ALBANY – Albany police have identified the man killed in a homicide on First Street Friday night. He is 26-year-old Raheem Douglas of Albany.
The shooting remains under investigation.
Police said the call came in around 7:40 Friday night for shots fired in the area of First Street and Lexington Avenue. When officers arrived, they said they found the man in the intersection with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was taken to Albany Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
"This was some sort of conflict between these two men and obviously the conflict went sideways," said Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins. "This is another example of a senseless act of violence that should have been resolved in a peaceful way."
This is the second homicide in the city of Albany in one week. On Monday, Oct. 14 police said a 20-year-old man was shot and killed on Second Street. No one has been arrested in that incident.
Chief Hawkins said the violence needs to end.
"We had a meeting just two or three hours ago with elected officials, stakeholders from this community to talk about strategies to resolved these sorts of issues," said Chief Hawkins Friday night. "How can we get this message out that this is not the way to resolve these conflicts? We had a very good conversation about that. We came up with some strategies for doing so and it’s not something that happens overnight, you don’t change a mindset overnight but we got to start."
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Albany Police Detective Division at (518) 462-8039.
