GLENMONT - Things are heating up for a man in Glenmont. After 10 years of hard work and determination, he's at the top of his game - and is heading to Europe to compete in a world championship.
He's not a professional athlete – or a cyclist gearing up for the Tour de France. Win or lose, he'll make "a ton of dough."
Amore is Italian for "love," but Anthony Berghela has not always-loved making pizza. Just 10 years ago, the owner of Romo's in Glenmont was feeling unsatisfied working for a local company. So when he saw a pizzeria for sale - he bought it. Up until then, his pizza experience was just eating it.
Before long - Berghela developed a real love for making pizza. He'd watched and read all he could. He started attending national pizza expos and taking classes in San Francisco.
He started making his own sauce. His own dough. Different ones - for different pizzas.
He quickly outgrew his first location. Then his second. Now, working out of his full-service restaurant in Glenmont - he's caught the attention of the World Pizza Champions, who asked him at a recent expo in Vegas to join the team.
Berghela is now getting ready for the world championships in Italy this April. He's staying sharp, still trying to learn all he can – and even teaching a thing or two to eager amateurs.
