The bill is sponsored by Assemblymember Joanne Simon, a Democrat from Brooklyn. It cites firearm-related violence as a "significant public health and safety problem."

Co-sponsors include Democratic Assemblyman Phil Steck and Democratic Assemblywoman Pat Fahy from the Capital Region.

However, not everyone in state government is on board. That includes State Senator Pamela Helming, a Republican from the Finger Lakes area. She says the bill would hurt organizations that rely on these type of funds.

Right now, there are no votes for this bill in this legislative session.
