HALFMOON - A new billboard on Route 9 in Halfmoon hopes to raise awareness about the deadly consequences of impaired driving.

Every year, students at Shenendehowa High School design billboards as part of their graphic design class and one is chosen as the winner.

This year's winner comes with a very personal and heartbreaking story, and it is sure to have an impact on drivers as they go by.

The billboard was designed by senior Rachael Piskun. It has her uncle and second cousin, 3-month-old Mac. Her uncle was killed by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel back in 2013.

This year, 65 students participated in this project. Ten of them will have their designs featured on a digital billboard on Route 50 up in Ballston Spa.

The winning designs are chosen by the folks from Lamar Advertising and a woman named Linda Campion, who lost her daughter to a drunken driver 30 years ago.

The graphic design class at Shen has been doing this every year since 2001.

The teacher in charge of it all says that there are usually four or five students that have personal stories of loss.

Hear more from the student who designed the billboard about the personal connection it has by watching the video of Jacquie Slater's story.
