Friends and family gathered in Corinth for a candlelight vigil Wednesday night to mourn a mother and daughter killed in a tragic house fire.
Tonya Slimmer, 39, and Briaunna Slimmer, 15, died Monday morning when a fire broke out at their home on Main Street. Both died of smoke inhalation.
Tonya Slimmer was a mother of nine. The close-knit community of Corinth already has begun collecting donations at the United Methodist Church in Corinth to help the surviving family members.
"The community, they're awesome here," Teyve Valencia said Wednesday. "They've all come together in tragedy. I just hope it continues." She was one of many who gathered at the site of the fire for the vigil to remember the lives lost.
Valencia said the town plans to conduct various fundraisers in the coming months to help the family
