Deadline for NY municipalities to opt out of cannabis sales arrives

December 31 was the deadline for cities, towns and villages across New York state to decide if they want to allow the sale of marijuana.

The New York State Legislature legalized adult use of recreational marijuana back in March. However, the law allows municipalities to choose whether or not to allow the sale of pot at dispensaries and the consumption of pot at smoking lounges.

If local governments don't act, they will automatically enter into the retail market for marijuana.
