Major road and bridge work planned for Capital Region

May 10, 2019 01:25 PM

Some major road and bridge work could soon be happening in our area. The Capital District Transportation Committee is about to update their five-year plan, which features $490 million in new and existing projects.

Among the projects, the Kings Road Bridge in Schenectady will soon be replaced with a new one. The Francis Avenue Bridge that crosses I-890 will also get an overhaul. You can expect a new deck and wider shoulders.

The price tag for both bridges is $8.7 million - that Mayor Gary McCarthy says they just don't have.

That's where the CDTC comes in. The bridges will be completed as part of the Capital District Transportation Committee's five-year improvement plan.

The CDTC acts as the go-between for Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Saratoga counties and the federal government.

Executive Director Michael Franchini says all 77 municipalities in the region pick their top priorities and submit them for consideration. If approved, they get 95 percent of their funding from the feds.

This five-year plan includes $180 million in new projects. In Albany County, the Everett Street Bridge will get an overhaul. In Saratoga County, the Northway will see extensive repaving.

A final ruling on the projects comes next month. The hope is they're all completed by 2024.
