This training is important. You hear us say it all the time during our reports that a certain police department was assisted by another in their response or investigation. This training is an important part of making sure they know each other, work well together -- and have similar training, beliefs and backgrounds to help keep the public and the officers safe during critical emergency situations.

The entire training facility is 1,100 acres. It's the former Oneida County Airport, featuring different venues for specialized training opportunities.

The training focused on close quarters tactical training.

First up were members of the Troy SWAT team, doing room sweeps. A long, dimly lit hallway, each room swept and potential suspects removed. Their movements are slow and methodical.

Colonie had half of their 19 member SWAT team there, working to clear stairwells. Trainers say stairways are actually one of the most dangerous things to do for law enforcement. Role players positioned strategically throughout the multiple levels simulated real-life suspects and victims.

They train 10,000 to 12,000 people there a year. Since opening in 2006, they've trained more than 100,000 law enforcement officers.

Trainers say every time there is a mass incident, the calls come in.

They do train people from all across the country -- and departments in Canada. However, as a state-run facility, New York takes precedence.
