City officials look to address violence in Albany

Gun violence continues to plague the city of Albany, after several shootings were reported this past week.

Police say there have been 58 shootings and 15 homicides this year. So far, Albany police have also taken nearly 100 illegal guns off the street.

In this year’s proposed budget, city officials are looking to hire 80 officers.

"We need police presence to put minds at ease, and then, we have to get to the root of why we’re seeing an uptick in gun violence," Albany Common Councilman Owusu Anane said. "The solutions for this violence, the uptick in violence, is not in city hall. It’s not in any building, it’s right here in the streets. It’s with the people."

The Albany Common Council will vote on the budget by the end of the year.
