Cohoes Fire Department spreads holiday cheer

December 24, 2017 11:36 PM

COHOES - Members of the Cohoes Fire Department are making sure kids in the city know what it's like to feel the joy of Christmas, even if they can't afford it.

Santa was busy Sunday delivering presents to seven lucky families in Cohoes. Santa left his sleigh and reindeer at home and caught a ride with members of the Cohoes Fire Department.

The event was part of the fire department's Cheer for Children program. It collects used toys for families in need all year round. Some of them are given to people who lost their belongings in a fire.

About 80 or so families in need in Cohoes participate in the program and get donated used gifts for their kids, including stuffed animals, toy trucks, and books.

By the time Christmas rolls around, firefighters choose the lucky families for Santa to deliver free brand new toys to. Volunteers say this is what Christmas is all about.

“It's just great to see the kids enjoy what Christmas is all about,” said Cheer for Children chairman Jack Daigneault.

The Cohoes Fire Department have been collecting toys for kids for decades, but they've been helping Santa deliver some of those toys for the last 10 years or so.
