BALLSTON SPA - Recently married, John Heneghan and Caitlin Holtzman were driving to a wedding with three other people.
The five people were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Ushers Road and Route 9 in Clifton Park when a truck plowed into their Cadillac.
Both Heneghan, 33, and Holtzman who was 32, were killed. The three others were injured.

The truck was driven by 59-year-old Dickie Winn of Cohoes.

"These were people who were on their way to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends and isn't it tragic that the decision Mr. Winn made resulted in two of them losing their lives," said Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen.

Winn is a decorated military veteran and according to published reports, is a recipient of the Bronze Star for Valor.

Police say Winn had a blood alcohol concentration of .16 percent when he lost control of his Dodge Ram at about 3:00 Saturday afternoon, May 25.

He pleaded guilty Monday afternoon to aggravated vehicular homicide, reading to the court exactly what he did that day.

"I left my lane of travel and crashed the truck into the driver's side of a black Cadillac which was stopped at the intersection," Winn said. "As a result of my intoxication and reckless driving, I caused the death of John Heneghan and Caitlin Holtzman. I also caused serious physical injury to Luke O'Doherty, and Julia Staples."

Judge Jim Murphy is expected to sentence Winn to 6 and 1/3 to 19 years in prison as part of a negotiated plea agreement.

Winn remains free on $300,000 bond until his November 21 sentencing.
