A Hudson Valley Community College student is charged with making a terroristic threat and aggravated harassment after police say he threatened to kill members of the campus community via Snapchat last week.
Troy police say they booked 19-year-old Corey Hoyt after he was arrested by HVCC public safety. Hoyt is charged with a single count of terrorism and a single count of aggravated harassment.
According to court documents including a statement to police that NewsChannel 13 obtained at Troy City Court, Corey Hoyt, a student at HVCC, made threats over Snapchat to a fellow classmate.
According to court documents, contents of the Snapchat conversation including quote "kill an HVCC cop and steal his gun and then go to the library then what just say lots of people are going to be killed."
That fellow student, Troy police and HVCC campus safety say went right to campus safety to report the threat and show authorities the Snapchat messages within one-hour of receiving the threat.
Troy police haven't given NewsChannel 13 a comment yet.
NewsChannel 13 also reached out to HVCC to see what Hoyt's status is with the school and his private attorney. He did post bond of $10,000 and is due back in court later this month.
Corey Hoyt's lawyer released the following statement to NewsChannel 13, which comes from Hoyt's family:
"Corey is an excellent young man with an intellectual disability who has gone far beyond all expectations in pursuing his dream of obtaining a college degree at Hudson Valley Community College. While we cannot comment directly on the allegations because the charges are still pending, be assured that the accusations only tell a portion of what really occurred. To the extent Corey inadvertently caused any concern, he deeply regrets it and looks forward to returning to school as soon as some technical aspects are worked out with the College. Corey would never harm anyone and in fact is well known for his generosity and determination by his many friends and all his family who strongly support him."
