ALBANY – D-Day survivor Harold Williams from Valatie was invited to last month's 75th anniversary in France. However, at age 96 and in a nursing home, he decided it was best to stay here with his wife.
Ahead of July 4, NewsChannel 13 spoke to him about patriotism and his service.
"I thank God I live in America," Williams said. "We came from countries where people couldn't call their soul their own. I just thank God I live in America. My country's been good to me."
Williams was in the 62nd Armored Field Artillery.
When he returned home, he found faith and has also devoted time to the Capital City Rescue Mission. He was honored as Rescuer of the Year in October 1992.
"God spared my life. That's why I'm here. God spared us."
