Man found guilty of murdering woman in Fulton County

June 20, 2019 06:25 PM

It didn't take long for the Fulton County jury to convict the killer of 21-year-old Michaela MacVilla.

MacVilla was first reported missing on September 26 after working a night shift at Stewart's in St. Johnsville. Her body was found about a week later on an overgrown property in the town of Oppenheim.

More than a month later on November 15, Daniel Nellis was indicted.

The jury got the case on Wednesday, and Thursday that verdict was handed down.

MacVilla's family spoke with NewsChannel 13 after the verdict was read. Her parents say this isn't justice, it's vindication for their daughter. They've remained silent throughout this whole process. They told reporters it was difficult to see all of the coverage and social media posts while the investigation was going on.

They say they put their trust into the justice system, and they're happy they did.

Michaela's aunt says the parents have actually re-located to North Carolina, because it was too difficult in St. Johnsville.

The small community certainly rallied around the family while police were still looking for MacVilla last September, and even after when Michaela's body was found.

They say the support has been helpful. They say they're also grateful for support from Jacob Nellis, the defendant's son. They say this situation isn't easy for anyone, they lost a daughter. He lost a father.

Michaela's sister, Kimberly, died just 25 days before her, so this family has been grieving for almost a year now. They say now, they're focused on moving forward.

Nellis faces 15 years to life in jail when he's sentenced on August 22.
