“He was on the ice,” said firefighter James Meyers. “In between the locks it was frozen a little bit, just enough to hold him up, you could see his prints in the ice from when it got warm a couple of days ago then refroze."

Meyers said they aren’t sure how the dog, named Beast, got stuck at lock 11. He said he could’ve jumped down or fell.

Once firefighters lowered down a ladder to where he was stuck, Meyers lured Beast over.

"I had a treat in my pocket, called him over, started wagging his tail and I knew he was going to be friendly,” said Meyers. “I gave him a treat, picked him up and carried him up the ladder."

Which was a difficult task. Meyers said Beast is a big dog. He said you could tell the dog had been waiting and hoping for a rescue.

“He was seemed happy to be rescued that's for sure,” said Meyers. “Happy to see people."

Since the Amsterdam Fire Department posted the video of the rescue on Facebook, it’s gotten more than 300 shares and been viewed more than 10,000 times.

"I'm like holy cow I can't believe it, it's this many shares and likes, very surprised," said Meyers.

Meyers said he was just doing his job, which is to be there for the community when they’re in need. But he said it was a good feeling to help out beast and show the community how busy a firefighters jobs really is.

"We're definitely going nonstop, all day that's for sure,” said Meyers. "It feels great, I love animals as it is and I'm more than willing to help out any animal in need. It made me feel good and I'm glad it made the family feel good."

Beast only suffered from minor frostbite. He was back with his owner Friday night.
