BERNE - Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple wants to know who shot a dog not once but twice, and left it to die.

Sheriff Apple says the dog was found in a ditch on Peasley Road in the town of Berne with a gunshot wound to its skull.

"Once they started to examine the dog, they were like this dog wasn't hit. This dog was shot two times. And everybody was a little taken back. The dog was shot in the top of the head and the back of the head at the base of the neck," said Apple.

Michael Barber lives in Berne. He was surprised to hear what happened.

"I think it's very shocking. I don't know what's wrong with people anymore nowadays. I don't know what they think. There's no humanity. There's no feeling I guess," said Barber.

The sheriff says the animal was also emaciated and had to be euthanized.

Apple tells NewsChannel 13 the owner may have been identified and will be questioned.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Albany County Sheriff's Department at (518) 765-2351.
